Word counter

Essays with a limit, meta descriptions with a hard ceiling, a talk that must fit its slot: eventually everything you write has a number attached to it. Paste your text below for live counts of words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs, plus how long it takes to read or say out loud. Counts update as you type and nothing is uploaded.

What gets counted

A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, so hyphenated terms count as one. A paragraph is any non-empty line, which matches how most editors and CMS fields behave. Reading time assumes a typical adult pace of 200 words a minute; speaking time uses 130, a comfortable presentation pace.

tautau puts a mic button next to every text field on the web. Click it, speak, and your words land in the box with punctuation handled. A free account gives you 5 dictations a day, no credit card required.
